Binge-watching & TV series – Essay B
After the Second World War, as economy began to arise, the spread of television arose as well. Its diffusion helped to create a common culture, at least inside the same country. In Italy, at the end of the war there was a huge amount of dialects and one person from Naples would have never understood what a person from Milan said. The TV gave the possibility to learn the same Italian over the peninsula.
As the years passed, the cultural role of the TV faded and talk shows, reality shows and, in general, the so-called trash TV acquired importance. In my opinion, the ‘decline’ of the TV depends mainly on three factors: the popularity of streaming platforms, the perceived status of people in TV and the earnings.
Streaming platforms allow you to watch movies, documentaries and TV shows on demand and steal audience from traditional TV thanks to the customizability of the service.
About the status, often a person is considered famous or important only if he/she is on TV. This misconception nudges people, also important professors, to go in talk or reality shows not bringing an explanation about something but just an arid discussion.
The third point, the incomes, is linked to the other two: to buy the rights or to make a quality program is expensive and people probably will not watch it on your channel. It is more convenient to organize reality shows with people who do not want to be paid because they want only to be on TV.
If, in the past, television gave a positive impulse to the creation of a common culture in Italy, in the contemporary years it has a predominance of trash shows and low budget project, with few exceptions.
