Checklist strategies to improve conversation
My checklist of strategies to use to improve my understanding of natural speech in conversation:
– Stop the person who is speaking and not to be afraid to say you don’t understand
– Ask specific question on what you’re not understanding i.e.: who, what, when, how long…
– Ask to repeat a particular chunk of what he/she is saying
– Try to paraphrase what the person is saying in order to check if you are getting the sense, that is try to say in your own words what he/she is saying
– Try to give an answer or to comment in some way at what she/he is saying to see if your guess on what he/she was is saying is correct (I usually try to
give an answer or comment based on the only few words I can pick up)
– Stop the person who is speaking and ask for the meaning of a word or expression I can’t understand or gather the pronunciation very well.Chiara

My checklist!
Strategies to use to improve my understanding of natural speech in conversation:
– Try to focus only on the words that are meaningful and ignore all the words that disrupt my attention
– Interrupt a person when I don’t understand and tell them. (Don’t be afraid to let the person know I’m not following) Sorry, I’m not following… etc
– Ask for clarification when I need to check something I’m not sure about – So, if I’ve understood correctly, …..
– When I don’t understand a specific detail, use a question word so they don’t repeat the whole thing (Sorry, what? How much? When? How long? Where? Who?)
-Rephrase in my own words what I think I have understood
-Ask for the meaning of specific words if I don’t know the word
