Television has been giving much influences in our cultural development in Japan. Without television, tons of things might have been different from now in positive and negative way.
For the upsides, the existence of television has massively influenced on spreading sub-culture, that is, comics and cartoons for all the generation. Without doubt, everyone who grew up in Japan must have had experience of watching typical cartoons at their childhood. Since children in pre-school cannot read comics well, television plays an important role for them to visualize and to follow the story line by listening to characters and narratives. Passing the initiation at childhood, children who got interested in cartoons pick the comics in book store to obtain more detail of the story in parallel with the cartoon on TV. Cartoons can gravitate toward not only children, but also youth, adults and elderly. It is quite common that commuters on the train often watch cartoons or read comics on their smartphone. Therefore, television has heavily contributed to the development of the widely recognized sub-culture nowadays. A large number of auditors is always craving for a new season/episode of their favorite cartoons to binge watch.
On the other hand, there is a disadvantage of invention of television in our culture. TV programs are created to attract people and nudge them to binge watch, and lax people forget everything and stick to the television. This trend directly causes disappearance of family conversation during meal. In the past when most of household did not own a TV, having surrounded the small round table, they enjoyed talking and laughing on trivial daily topics with the family members. On contrary, TV is equipped in almost all household nowadays in Japan, which prevent the family to talk on their personal topics, but diverge their mind to something happening on TV. Thus, the appearance of TV definitely gave a negative impact on family relationship by depriving their essential communication opportunity.
