Remember to have the right mindset:

    · Communication is everyone’s responsibility, not must mine

    · Always okay to ask for clarification (native speakers do it all the time, never be afraid to ask)

    · Stay calm and admit when I don’t understand.

    In addition:

    · Maybe tell them ahead that I may not get some acronyms specific for this workplace (as there are too many)

    · If they talk too long, say that I want to break down their points and clarify with them going over one by one.

    · Have a list of the tricks and reformulation questions and keep practicing

This is a really thorough check list @so.lee – well done.

I really like your point about telling them ahead of time that you may not get some specific terms. I always do this when, for example, I visit the doctor or the vet here in Italy. I warn them that I might not understand medical vocabulary. I find doing this makes them aware and they change the way the explain things.
