  • A big change in my life!

My husband and I used to live for over thirty years in an old patrician house. We liked it there because the house was relatively central and yet we still had a garden with fruit trees. Our two children grew up there. The only drawback was that the house was relatively isolated, being slightly elevated on a slope. So we had almost no contact with our neighbours.

Five years ago we moved to a new settlement near the lake. This was like a new life for me. First of all because we finally have had neighbours, many and very likeable ones, and so we feel very comfortable here. Secondly, I love the proximity to the lake, because I am a water lover and I can go out on the lake with my stand up paddle. And along the lake shore you can take wonderful walks.

We still live centrally and everything is easily accessible by bike.

Thirdly, I always thought I prefered old buildings and that they were more charming and cosy to live in. But now that I have experienced what it is like to live in a new building, I wouldn’t change. A new building offers a lot of comfort with floor heating, well insulated rooms, automatic ventilation and everywhere the much needed sockets for electricity and for internet connection, so that one does not need any more annoying extension cables.

I’m very grateful for that positive change! Slight Smile

@Gabriela that’s funny… when I was reading your description about your house that was ‘relatively isolated’ I was thinking …it’s my dream! Last year when we moved to Como, we had about 3 days to find a flat (and it was slim pickings I assure you!) Anyway, really out of desperation we chose the flat we are currently in. I can’t stand it. When I look out the window I see into all my neighbour’s flats, and we are sandwiched in between and under noisy families … I feel like we are in fishbowl! Cannot wait to make a change!

I’m very happy for you that this big change gave you a new lease of life – it sounds exciting that you can go on your paddle whenever you want and enjoy lake life. As for modern buildings, I have had a similar experience. I love the feeling of old buildings but the comforts of new builds are unbeatable.

Notes: this piece is very well written and enjoyable to read. Honestly I only have two corrections to make.

    > instead of ‘settlement’ I’d use ‘development’ (as in housing development). (We use settlement to describe historic places that previously had been uninhabited, and then people established a community.)

    > In this phrase: First of all because we finally have had neighbours > it is sufficient to use the past simple: First of all because we finally had neighbours

    Excellent workđź‘Ť
