I think that it is relatively easy to distinguish an American accent from a British one. For instance, let´s take into account the word water. In American English the final r is pronounced but in British English (I mean one of them, RP accent) is not pronounced. The termination er is pronounced with the shwa sound. Last but not least, Americans tend to pronounce the t as a d. British peope, on the contrary, maintain the t sound.
