The world’s English mania
Well, I don’t know the current situation in China regarding learning English being a mania, but I would say that this can be the case of Italy.
Nowdays an excellent knowledge of English is something that makes your c.v. standing out and more and more the number of students that attend private American secondary schools or the number of universities that offer academic courses and degrees run in English are increasing in Italy (it goes without saying all that is for those students who can afford high fees).
That is why I agree with Walker’ statement on why studying English is an oppurtunity: not only is it an opportunity to access to a more succesful career but also to get in contact to a wider part of the world, to be able to communicate and build relations with people from all over the world.
As for whether English mania is good or bad I think it depends: I don’t think that there is a direct connection between becoming English the global language for communication around the world and the decline of many languages.
My opinion is, that what is bad it’s the attitude to make feeling left out those who are not good at English or are not keen on study it.
What’s more I don’t agree in full with considering English the language of problem solving: problem solving requires an open and flexible mindset, it is a pivotal soft skill then, whereas English is a means of communication, an effective one though, that affects the lingusitic skill. English can contribute to eases the communication, but I don’t think can be the only language to express common problems and to join people as a global community.
