The World’s English Mania
I have to say that I didn’t know that learning English was so important in China. And I felt uncomfortable looking at these photos and listening to the Chinese repeating these phrases…it sounds like real propaganda. I don’t like seeing young people being manipulated in this way, even if it is for a good cause. Everybody should be free to make his own decision.
I partially agree with Walker who compares learning English to a mania.
It could be the case if somebody is keen on learning foreign languages or even on English particularly. Otherwise, in my opinion, it’s something that became extremely useful, above all because of globalization.
As Walker, English means opportunity to me. On a large scale, having a universal language eases communication among different countries. Moreover, it allows to get more information on any possible topic. It helps being more open-minded because when we learn a new language, we know a different culture than ours. And last but not least, it enlarges the professional opportunities.
To answer the question if English mania is good or bad, I would say that anyway learning new things is always something positive. But I don’t agree with considering it the language of problem-solving: unfortunately having a good knowledge of a language it’s not enough to figure out issues…
