Slang
People who use slang are lazy… I don’t think so. I believe the point is finding a proper register/style depending on the context and situations. It could be appropriate/suitable using slang in a familiar and informal context like/as with friends, family or in a casual context; whereas it should be expected not using slang in a different context, like office or every professional situation that required a formal attitude.
In my opinion it is more chanllenging to use slang when you are speaking than understanding it while I read an article or I listen to movie or series; in this case, sometimes, I can guess the meaning from the context, without knowing the exact meaning.
Using slang, in my mind, is something that belongs to people with an high level of English’s knowledge, then I believe that a non-native speaker could have same difficulties using and understanding slang.
It could be a good idea to realize which style, formal or informal, you must use in different situations; and then, if the context is informal, you can try to use some slang, as long as you are able to remember some expressions…
