In my opinion slang is one of the funniest parts of a language to learn, but not the easiest (for example young expressions change fast and a non-native speaker, but also older people can’t hold the track of new expressions). It is a register that can be used un informal situatiin, especially with native speakers, but you should stake to standard english when talking to non-native speakers or also when you have never met that person before. Slang should never be used when working or in an academic contest (unless you are studying it).

Quite true. My neighbour (British, around 18) used the word ‘yeet’ the other day and I had to ask her what it meant. She just laughed at me and said I was so old! Charming.
