Tamara de Lempicka
In the article, the author outlines the life and career of the one of the most appreciate female
painter of the post World War I: the Polish Tamara de Lempicka. According to the author, Tamara
de Lempicka was the symbol of this era, when deep social changes and economic growth
influenced also the way how many women perceived their own way of life and behave. Known as
“The Baroness with a Brush,” as the title of the piece remarks, Tamara de Lempicka was
considered as one of the most illustrious exponent of Art Deco style. Her favorites subjects were
self-portraits and women portraited as emancipated with short hair, elegant clothes and confident
look.
This piece describes in short paragraphs all the different phases of Lempicka’s life: her first
experiences in art (she was exposed to the art very early at the age of 10), her first success with an
exhibition in Milan in 1925, her rising to fame at the end of 1930, perfectly represented by one of
her most famous work in 1929 (Tamara in a Green Bugatti), her scandalous private life and her
decline in favor of abstract Expressionism.
In the 1970’s her works and her figure known a new interest and revival. Almost forty years after
her death in 1980, Lempicka’s works were much appreciate today by pop artists and celebrities
such Madonna, Jack Nicholson and Barbra Streisand which are some of the most important
collectors of her paintings.
